Role of Legal Associate in Club Based Business

The Associate is responsible to report to the Club’s membership and its Legal Director by providing legal assistance in the management, drafting, and revision of the Club’s Rules and By-Laws. They will also have to draft the Minutes of the Meeting, Notices of Annual General Meetings and Special General Meetings, Agendas, Matters of the Meetings, Resolutions, etc. The Associate is tasked to draft and maintain records of all legal and member documentation, including the Notices of Annual General Meetings and Special General Meetings, the Resolutions, and any change to the rules and by-laws. Further, the Associate must provide training to the staff, when required, and ensure compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) and the EU’s General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). They will be responsible for helping in drafting and examining general corporate contracts, organizing or coordinating general meetings, committee meetings, and other related meetings, and any other responsibilities that may be assigned by the Director or the management.

Working as a Legal Associate expects certain skills as required by the latest industry demands. The job of a Legal Associate or a Legal Assistant is challenging and the essentials skills required in such a post are divided into two fundamental abilities, i.e. prior experience and legal knowledge. Candidates seeking such jobs must have a minimum graduate degree in LLB from a recognized university in the jurisdiction of the job. This gives a recruiter the confidence that the candidate has the basic theoretical knowledge to understand the corporate ins and outs of a social club that has existed for a long time. Apart from qualification, another important aspect of consideration is Prior Experience. Prior Experience is very important today, as companies often wish to save the time to train their newly hired employees by hiring those that have experience in the field they operate in. The Club mandates that candidates must have prior experience in legal services, corporate commercial contracts, and PDPA compliance agreements. The candidate must be well-versed in supervising, drafting, and revising any Rules or Bylaws when required, and possess excellent communication skills in English. It would be preferable if the candidate has communication, speaking, and writing skills in Mandarin.

While these skills are specific to the requirements of the Club, a candidate seeking a job as a Legal Associate or a Legal Assistant must also possess certain general skills such as the ability to multi-task, organize and prioritize work according to their deadlines, have a responsible and ethical character, and be willing to learn from their superiors. Such candidates must be able to work independently with minimal guidance and be proficient in MS Office, as today most companies and firms depend on it for operation. Thus, the important thing that candidates must focus on is how they can be an asset to the team they want to join and be capable of evolving with their assigned work.
